The latest update to the Henley Passport Index is out, and India has ranked 87th on the list of 199 passports. According to the results from the Index, passport holders with the greatest global access are currently the most restricted and reluctant to enjoy their travel freedom. It is based on exclusive and official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Japan holds the number one spot on the index and Japanese passport holders can enjoy visa-free travel to 193 countries, while Singapore and South Korea are close seconds, with access to 192 countries.

Dr Juerg Steffen, CEO of Henley & Partners, says “throughout the chaos of the pandemic, the benefits of a second or even third passport were self-evident for investors seeking security and peace of mind. Governments have also acknowledged the merits that investment migration offers citizens of host countries if foreign direct investment funds are adequately allocated to much-needed social and economic development initiatives. We have seen an increase of 55% in enquiries compared to the previous quarter, which was itself record-breaking. The top four nationalities currently driving demand are Russians, Indians, Americans, and Brits, and for the first time ever, Ukrainians are in the top 10 globally.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic year 2020, India had access to just 23 countries for travel as it had also imposed a ban on international travel due to the pandemic, which was revoked after two years in March 2022. However, according to the list, India has now visa-on-arrival access to 60 countries. The list is updated every quarter. India was placed at the 85th place in the second quarter of 2022 and dropped two places this quarter- which is a good news for all Indian travel lovers!
