To manage the surge in tourist visits and protect the ecological balance of the Nilgiris region in Tamil Nadu, the Madras High Court has mandated the acquisition of an e-pass for travelers planning to visit Ooty and Kodaikanal. Effective from May 7 to June 30, 2024, this new requirement aims to regulate the flow of tourists during the peak season, ensuring sustainable tourism practices.
The introduction of the e-pass system was initiated by a special division bench led by Justices D Bharatha Chakravarthy and N Sathish Kumar in response to the challenges posed by the high volume of tourists in these hill stations. However, there is no limit on the issuance of e-passes, and local residents are exempt from this regulation, prioritizing their convenience.
This decision by the Madras High Court also addresses the issue of traffic congestion, particularly along the ghat roads leading to Ooty and Kodaikanal. By implementing the e-pass system, the court aims to gather essential data on vehicular movement, aiding in the management of traffic flow and infrastructure planning.
In light of a recent report highlighting the substantial influx of vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, during peak seasons, District Collectors have been directed to establish an online platform for e-pass issuance. These passes are mandatory for entry, facilitating controlled access to these popular destinations and reducing traffic congestion on critical roadways.
Ooty, also known as Udagamandalam, attracts tourists with its picturesque landscapes, pleasant climate, and timeless charm, earning its reputation as the “Queen of Hill Stations.” Notable attractions in Ooty include:
1. Ooty Botanical Gardens: Spanning 55 acres, this horticultural marvel showcases a diverse collection of exotic plants and hosts the annual Ooty Flower Show, a major draw for visitors.
2. Ooty Lake: Built in 1824, this man-made lake sprawls over 65 acres and offers leisure activities such as boat rides amidst scenic surroundings.
